Week Six: WIKIS

I found the common craft YouTube clip fantastic on Wikis in Plain English, I like the simple easy going little white papers with texta and the instant click of a finger from a wiki webpage as such to an editing page click save and bam  you have contributed to a wiki….. Pretty simple, I did however find that wikis are a fairly simple web 2.0 tool as they are a collaborative medium that many of us have used, I have used a type with me page, not a wiki as such but a blank canvas for a group of us to collaborate and share and edit ideas on a single page, we used the type with me page for a group assignment and weekly contribution pages, so I found that wikis basically run on the same principle, I enjoyed going into the sandpit and practicing publishing information to Wikipedia, it was a fairly user friendly site that seamlessly made it easy to contribute to the Wikipedia, After reading the information in regards to wikis in the module 2.2 wikis I can understand why Wikipedia is not a great source of academic information for assignments, but really appreciate that anyone can contribute….. I always go to Wikipedia when I need a general understanding of something then usually the references can be used to trace where the authors have retrieved their information from, possibly this source of information then can be used in assignments….. I was interested at the idea of Wikipedia being a communicator of news like the changes in the London bombing, because in the event of a catastrophe Wikipedia is the last place I would sort of think of to edit information to…..
I am yet to contribute a valuable piece of knowledge to Wikipedia but am cast back to a time when I was so engaged in the How I met your mother series that I needed to know who the mother was….. Somehow I thought that the answer had to be out there somewhere, I remember googling who is the mother in HIMYM…. And was directed to Wikipedia where there was an entire page dedicated to the 6 series aired with a rundown of each episode, I spent hours reading all the information….. Now I can see that obviously some one was bored and felt compelled to share their enthusiasm for HIMYM for the world to see, or anybody who was interested in the TV series himym, there was links to the actors, the directors’ you name it. Truly amazing trivial information there for people to see…..

Week 4: WEB 2.0

Flicking through the course material for this week I was laughing when I noticed elements of WEB 1.0 the blinking tag, the GIF’s and the term frames, it is so true that these elements are not nearly used as much as in the early web designing days…. I was really interested in seeing the components as such of the WEB 2.0 as we know it, full of social networking pages, large amounts of webpage’s created by us, the users like Facebook pages, Flickr photos and YouTube footage being uploaded onto the internet. I love the fact that the internet is used to share and collaborate. It is truly a great time to living in and quite exhilarating to imagine that it can only get better. I wonder how the internet can revolutionise the world anymore than it actually has….. Metadata was a term that I had not come across, I am still coming to terms with the terminology data within data, I subscribed to Delicious quite confused as to what I was doing and had actually bookmarked a few sites and “Tagged” the sites with WEB101, I know understand that it is a great tool to collaborate and share information tagged in a user friendly way…. It will be very useful now to use for the next 3 years of my teaching degree because I have always relied on Firefox bookmarking system but forget to actually name the pages and have to read through much of the pages I have bookmarked to find what I was looking for…. So it will be great to tag the pages with titles that are relevant to me and my assignments as such, definitely a time saver and great way to keep reliable readings at hand....
RSS interested me, I still need to possibly further investigate RSS I have not subscribed to pages before and have not felt a need to, but I am sure when I dabble into the RSS feed it will revolutionise my life as most web technologies do…..

Week 3: Going way back:.... and what is the World Wide Web???

What a fantastic task, It was really interesting being able to view the changes in webpage’s from the late 90’s to now….. It really amazes me as a fairly enthusiastic web surfer to actually say I didn’t really notice any change. It is true that many have speculated that webpage’s have changed from a linear design to an actual flash frenzy of limited words but brand icons and advertisements…. I loved viewing the Apple website and seeing the huge computers that were at the time so amazing but actually big bricks now with such limited hard drives ….. The Google website transformation amazed me because it was originally a project from Stamford university (I did not know that), but as the years progressed, it obviously became a hit website and a worldwide icon, and they advertised jobs on the website and many more advertisements were seen on google.com, it was noticeable that Google kept with their fairly simple brand icon as a logo and really only played around with fonts. I have Google as my home page as many others would and I am amused at the great Google icon images they come up with….. The guitar strings that strummed when the mouse hovered over it recently were wonderful and noisy. Today I loved the pretty snowflakes and the 3 eyed monster and bunny (So cute!!!). The dominos store website was pretty funny, it was just a blue page about the pizza and a slab of writing, and yep being a gen y I really could not be bothered reading it!!!! I liked how dominos just advertised silly little facts on their webpage like Perth being the 1000 store to be opened J and that they delivered a pizza underwater! WEIRD!!! I know I have been ordering pizza on line for some time maybe for 3 years, it is great to jump online and order my pizza and track when it is ready…. As I hate making unnecessary phone calls now because of the online ordering systems (I purchased mine and my partner’s iPhone online) not once did I actually speak to a human…. And my phone was delivered to my front door J Oh and I have a cool dominos app now where I can order pizza from where ever I am J too cool I say.
I also enjoyed completing the task where we had to view HTML code. In high school I have a little experience with designing webpage’s with HTML possibly because there were not as many free wonderful programs to design webpage’s….. I am grateful for the wonderful programs to help us design webpage’s without having to know how to write the codes, because it is very time consuming to write all the code to get a simple icon to move, let’s leave that to the programmers!!! Just to display a simple word requires another 50 codes to display the word on a webpage (OK maybe a slight exaggeration) but still!!!
I have not actually read online novels to experience the lovely hypertext phase as it was imagined. But I have created an e- portfolio where I used hyperlinks to send readers to information I wanted them to view if they wanted too. So I do appreciate the great idea of the hypertext. I know on many occasions I have been on a hyperlink trail and ended up on a completely different topic by just clicking on link after link, I know Wikipedia is a big one where I get lost, or YouTube. I would like to add though that as an early adolescent child I was quite excited by the goose bump series of books where the readers were able to choose where they wanted to go in the book and could chose the endings as such, I suppose for a writer this was also good because if they could not choose between themes they had in mind they could keep them all and include them all in the novel. I might be off track but this is exactly what I thought of when I read in week 3 that hypertext was aimed at allowing the reader to be in control of the book, and the reader could chose what direction or path they wanted by clicking on the hypertext branches.
Finally to wrap up this huge blog, do I actually understand what the World Wide Web is??? I am beginning to see that the world wide web is a program devised by Berners-Lee to enable many to many communication which was inspired by a notion from Vannaver Bush in 1945 ( Yes 1945) to have an easily accessible and internally linked repository of information ( Bush, 1945).  Bush envisioned a workstation that could be used to store and access information in ways intuitive to the human mind.  In order for Bush’s idea to be real technology needed to catch up so when the internet was developed it was possible for computers to link to a network and share data but unfortunately not all computers and files were compatible with each other so this needed to be worked on, Berners- lee had devised a plan to utilise the internet to have a large database of hypertext words stored in a file for people to access on the internet. Berners and his colleagues then worked on developing the tools to have an effective world wide web. The World Wide Web consists of a transfer protocol (HTTP Hyper text transfer protocol) A web server A language to display the information (HTML hypertext mark up language) and a web browser that is actually named the World Wide Web. The World Wide Web became the public face of the internet and has easily been misinterpreted as the Internet. But golly gosh it is quite a complex notion to understand…. I am getting there.... Week Two: What is the Internet....

Wow..... I am completely petrified!!!! What is the internet???? Well there was heaps of study material to witness which was great, The little video presentations kind of flicked the switch in my head on..... I now am aware that the internet has been around for 40 + years, not 15 like I previously would have believed, but I am still trying to cypher all the information in my head.... (Packet switching,  TCP/IP and all the gobbily goop that goes with it). The iLecture was fantastic, I think I should actually listen to the lectures before I begin any of the weeks work, because the lecture really broke each little piece of information down into so called laymen terms... which is what i need. So I am closer to starting the first question and answer assignment!!! which is good.
Any ways that is all from me.... Maybe as we progress through the course my blogging will be a little more inspiring :) Bye for now

Week One: Introduction to WEB101.... My reflection

So here we go week one…… How did I find week one, hmmmm Well I really liked the introduction to WEB101 lecture…. I am finding the whole layout of WEB101 quite daunting in comparison to my EDP units, the entire blackboard is set up differently, but I am sure I will get my head around it….
In regards to the material I witnessed this week:I found the Nameckr really informative; there are so many sites out there that I have no idea about…. I thought honestly that I was up to date and knowledgeable with technology and the internet; um it looks like I have a lot to learn….  I have found a great username that I believe will be useful for me in consolidating all my usernames TheTaz85 will be my username; I already use the name on Facebook, Twitter iTunes …. Hmmm then I found out that TheTaz85 is taken on YouTube…. Hmmmm who would have used this username???
That is my small but concise reflection of the week that was!!!

See you next week Cheers The Taz!!!

All about me :)

Hi my lovelies….
This is my first experience blogging; I am a keen Facebook status updater…. I never seem to mind telling everyone about the great mundane tasks that I do on a daily basis, so let’s see if this blog is just as boring…. But it is all about me and my feelings, so how can it be boring….
Just to start I will let you in on a little secret if you don’t know me…. My name is Taryn McDonald and I live in Sunbury, Victoria…. Yep the birthplace of the Ashes, he he he…. I am a mother of 2 lovely little children ( Lovely sometimes any way) Tahlia is my daughter who is 7 and in grade 2 and Tyson who is 4 and currently in Kinder, I will be sending him off to school next year J (that’s right grin ear to ear…..).
I am currently studying towards a Bachelor of Education (Primary) degree, I have completed 1 year thus far, and hope to continue onto a secondary college degree….. (Maybe).
I have spent my working years so far baking…. Mmmm yes I am a pastry cook and a keen enthusiastic cake decorator…. Well I decorate cakes for FUN…. Although it is not always fun, the pressure gets to me at times, mostly because I have never been taught the proper skills, I just make it up as I go and impress myself with each cake….. But that is enough about me for now!!!! I will now be using this blog to reflect on my studies within WEB101 web communications
Cheers The Taz!!!!
